Sports Digest: Anthony leads Sea Dogs to 9-3 win in completion of suspended game

BASEBALL

Roman Anthony was 3 for 6 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs, leading the Portland Sea Dogs to a 9-3 win over the Reading Fightin Phils in the completion of a suspended game Sunday in Reading, Philadelphia.

Blaze Jordan and Kyle Teel also drove in two runs apiece. Wikelman Gonzalez struck out six in three scoreless innings before the game was stopped Saturday night. He allowed two hits and walked three. CJ Liu took over when the game resumed Sunday and struck out nine over four innings.

SOCCER

SPAIN: Suspended Spanish soccer federation president Luis Rubiales resigned from his post after a kiss scandal that tarnished Spain’s victory at the Women’s World Cup.

Rubiales announced his resignation Sunday in a message on social media.

Rubiales kissed star player Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent during the awards ceremony after Spain beat England to win the title on Aug. 20 in Sydney, Australia. He had already been suspended from his job by FIFA.

EURO 2024 QUALIFYING: Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s 86th-minute goal gave Denmark a 1-0 win over Finland to take a big step toward qualifying for the European Championship next year.

Denmark moved to the top of Group H on 13 points, one ahead of Finland and surprise contender Kazakhstan, which beat Northern Ireland, 1-0.

GERMANY: Hansi Flick was removed as coach of the men’s national team, one day after a 4-1 loss to Japan deepened the gloom around the squad ahead of hosting next year’s European Championship.

BASKETBALL

WORLD CUP: Tournament MVP Dennis Schroder scored 28 points, Franz Wagner added 19, and Germany capped off an unbeaten run through the World Cup by holding off Serbia, 83-77 in Manila, Philippines, to win its first title.

Canada sent the U.S. home without a medal, as Dillon Brooks scored 39 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 31 points and 12 assists in a 127-118 victory in the third-place game.

WNBA: Brittney Sykes scored on a lob pass at the buzzer to lift the visiting Washington Mystics to a 90-88 victory over the New York Liberty to close out the regular season.

The teams will meet in the first round of the playoffs, starting Friday in New York.

• A’ja Wilson scored 36 points, and the Las Vegas Aces finished up the regular season with a 100-85 home win over the Phoenix Mercury.

• Courtney Williams finished with a triple-double, scoring six of her 23 points in overtime, to rally the Chicago Sky to a 102-91 win over the Connecticut Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

• Kelsey Mitchell scored 24 points, and Aliyah Boston had eight of her 19 in a game-closing 18-2 run as the Indiana Fever beat the visiting Minnesota Lynx, 87-72.

• Arike Ogunbowale scored 20 of her 32 points in the second half, and the visiting Dallas Wings beat the Atlanta Dream, 94-77, in a preview of their first-round playoff series.

• Seattle’s Jewell Loyd scored 28 points, setting a league record with 939 points on her way to the scoring title, but the Los Angeles Sparks rallied for a 91-89 win in Seattle.

GOLF

EUROPEAN TOUR: Vincent Norrman gave Sweden a second straight winner on the European tour when he shot 7-under 65 to capture the Irish Open title, as Rory McIlroy faltered in the final round by hitting into the water on three different holes.

Norrman finished at 14 under and beat Germany’s Hurly Long (72) by one stroke. McIlroy closed with a 74 and tied for 16th.

LPGA: Minjee Lee lost a five-shot lead on the back nine but recovered at just the right time, hitting wedge to 2 feet for birdie to beat Charley Hull on the second playoff hole in the Kroger Queen City Championship in Cincinnati.

AUTO RACING

INDYCAR: Scott Dixon snagged his third win of the season in the season finale at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, clinching second place in the final standings behind Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Alex Palou.

COLLEGES

FOOTBALL: Michigan State suspended Coach Mel Tucker without pay, less than 24 hours after allegations became public in a USA Today report that he sexually harassed activist and rape survivor Brenda Tracy during a phone call last year.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: Portuguese veteran Rui Costa sprinted to victory in the 15th stage, while American Sepp Kuss retained the overall lead of the three-week race.

Costa beat Lennard Kämna and Santiago Buitrago to the line in the 98.5-mile ride from Pamplona to Lekunberri.
