Area roundup: SEU shuts out Wabasso, GFW storms past Medford

WABASSO — Sleepy Eye United shut out Wabasso 26-0 Friday in a Southwest District, South Subdistrict football game.
Caden Evers completed 18 of 26 attempts for 255 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for United, while Jon Petermann had 32 rushing yards and a touchdown. Talan Helget caught five balls for 113 yards and three touchdowns for SEU, while Austin Uecker had six catches for 86 yards. Defensively for United, Winsten Nienhaus had seven total tackles and a sack, while Helget and Uecker had an interception each.
For Wabasso, Calvin Hanna had 15 rushes for 90 yards on offense. On defense, Boston Brand had 17 total tackles, while Kaysen Harms had four total tackles and an interception.
SEU (3-0) hosts St. James on Friday. Wabasso (0-3) travels to Springfield on Friday.
GFW 64, Medford 6
MEDFORD — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop cruised past Medford 64-6 in a Mid Southeast District, West Subdistrict football game on Friday.
Owen Swenson led the Thunderbirds on the ground with six rushes for 164 yards and four touchdowns, while Justin Messer had two rushes for 100 yards and a score. Easton Taylor had three carries for 35 yards and two touchdowns, while Regie Mattes had two carries for 26 yards and a score. Garret Schmidt had eight carries for 42 yards, along with a kickoff return for a touchdown.
Defensively, Luke Bastian had four tackles, while Dominic Rose and Braylan Freitag had an interception apice. Owen Swenson added 3.5 tackles and a sack.
GFW (3-0) hosts Lester Prairie on Friday.
RCW 42, Madelia 16
MADELIA — Renville County West downed Madelia 42-16 in a Nine-Man South District, West Subdistrict football game on Friday.
Eric Anderson led the Blackhawks with 256 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception, while running the ball 18 times or 65 yards and a score. Chase Osborne had seven catches for 58 yards, while Kyle Pietsch had six receptions for 96 yards.
Madelia (0-3) travels to Nicollet on Friday.
Springfield 48, RTR 22
TYLER — Springfield took down Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 48-22 in a in a Southwest District, South Subdistrict football game Friday night.
Jakob Nachreiner led the Tigers with 315 passing yards and six touchdowns, while Carter Olson had 163 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Brayden Sturm had 109 yards receiving and two touchdowns, while Sam Rummel had 96 yards rushing. Defensively, Ashton Doll had nine tackles for Springfield.
Springfield (3-0) host Wabasso on Friday.
Late Thursday
Waseca 2, New Ulm 1
WASECA — The Waseca Bluejays, first in the Big South Conference, held off the New Ulm Eagles 2-1 on Thursday in a Big South Conference girls soccer game.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the 31st minute after a corner kick by Jesalyn Skoglund was tapped in by Anna Kramer. The Bluejays tied it five minutes later and then took the 2-1 lead in the second half.
Ellie Dake stopped 18 shots for New Ulm in net and denied a penalty shot.
The Eagles fell to 4-3-1 on the season and play at Mound Westonka on Saturday.
